WHEN A YEAR BECOMES A DECADE |
In my efforts to keep this article relevant as well as entertaining (hopefully), I maintain my subscriptions to newspapers and magazines that keep me connected with what's going on in the world outside Tangled Oaks. The computer is about "right now", but newspaper features and magazines give their writers time to think and do research. And it's their research that can provide me with things I didn't remember or even KNOW but which would fit into an article so perfectly. Here at the end of the year I expected to read summaries of what happened-or didn't---in 2009. Fortunately I managed to save the article by Dave Barry, who comments at the end of the year on what has transpired. His view is often tongue in cheek as he recounts the fables and foibles of the year gone by. The year 2009 had plenty of material for him to work with.
However this year's publications focused not only on the year 2009, but on the whole decade! Things have not been going back so far since the century turned from the 1900's to the 2000's. Why is the media so set on reviewing the beginning of the 21st century? What was so good, or so bad, that we want to read about it again? Actually, a lot. For starters natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina and the Indonesian Tsunami are memorable because of the thousands of people who died. Then there were the manmade disasters like the fall of the Twin Towers following their attack by terrorists. Have things been so boring in 2009 that we have to dredge up the more sensational tragedies of the decades before? I didn't find the year 2009 boring. While the events starting off 2010 may be reminiscent of the past (political bantering and copycat terrorism), there will still be many things to write about. Hopefully you will join me in discovering them. |
