READERS: CAN YOU HELP ME?

This week's article is a bit different, because instead of TELLING you something, I am ASKING you something. Let me clarify that. I have spent the last few weeks searching the Internet for information about a surgical procedure called CAROTID ENDARTERECTOMY. Basically it is clearing plaque out of the carotid arteries in the neck that feed the brain with blood. When these become clogged to the point where blood flow is impeded, strokes can result. Google® has provided me with good articles, some with great illustrations, about this surgery. But my interest is really in HOW PEOPLE WHO HAVE IT TURN OUT. This is because my husband is tentatively scheduled to have it done on November 20th and he is quite nervous about it.

He has read everything available about it. He has talked to people who have had it done. Yet there is still a cloud of doubt hanging over him because his mother had this procedure done. A piece of plaque broke loose and went to her brain, causing a stroke. True, this was years ago. But she lost her ability to form speech and use the right side of her body. She lived the rest of her life requiring a live-in attendant.

My husband is afraid that this scenario could be his. Has anyone had any experience with having their "pipes cleaned out" as it is jokingly called? Has any family member, friend, or acquaintance had it done? Would you PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS BLOG WITH THAT INFORMATION? His decision about the risk of surgery versus the possibility of stroke without it has to be made SOON!

THANK YOU ALL IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP! JUSTMOM will be back on the 15th and again on the 29th.

Just Mom
