FLASH, CRASH, SPLASH

Today is the official First Day of Summer. It is also the first day in a long time that it isn't raining. Yesterday my husband was greeted with a family celebration of Father's Day. This meant 2 grandchildren, our daughter, and a yummy chocolate/cheesecake pie. We had planned to be away today, the 21st, so we celebrated early. As it happens, those plans were abruptly changed when we awoke to find that it was NOT RAINING!

This meant that the "rain forest" that had emerged while the lawn mower was in the repair shop could be cut down. Because we have a huge lawn, even getting half of it done is a reason to celebrate. The place where the mower first stopped working is nearly 2 feet tall and it will take several "runs" to get it down. The rest of the yard looks ragged, but there was nothing to do but watch it grow longer as it was nourished by constant rain. There was one day last week when my neighbor was outside mowing his lawn. He came over to comment on the way that it had rained nearly every day in June. And it was true; no sooner did the sun venture out than it was covered up again. Thunderstorms were the order of the day, and poor little Patches quivered with fear each time a bolt of lightning was followed by the predictable loud BOOM. At one point he jumped into my husband's lap to be comforted.

When my husband rides the mower, I go outside with the dogs to enjoy the fresh air. Today I used the good weather to re-visit the front of the house where I had stopped plucking weeds because of the weather. The soil was so moist that they easily gave up their hold and came out roots and all. Then I reached a point right under the picture window where I plucked a persistent thistle; but when I began to back out of the garden area, I got stuck. I used all kinds of maneuvers to get loose, but nothing worked. Finally I began waving frantically at my husband as he went by mowing the front lawn. When he saw me, he came over to rescue me from the mud. That put an end to cleaning out the front, but I did get a lot more weeds out. At least I can be proud of my efforts. I still need just one more day without rain to get the front totally done: no flashes, no crashes, and no splashes!
