Yesterday was the first official day of winter, but today it really lives up to that title. The snow that fell on the 19th, covered with ice on the 20th, dusted again last night with enough to put all the schools on a 2-hour delayed opening set the stage for today. Because this morning we awoke to temperatures below 10 degrees and a wind that could blow major buildings over, with a speed of 25 MPH and gusts up to 45! Skittles and Patches appeared to skate across the frozen lawn. Their floppy ears made them tiny ice boats going from the garage door (where I hid sheltered) to the barn and then over to see the neighbor's horse. Nicky made a plaintive whinny, probably in response to the bitter cold. The red dog that I've seen over there sometimes was apparently annoying the poor horse, as it could come and go through the fence while the horse was imprisoned.
The dogs brave the cold well, running briskly over the ice-covered snow and pausing to roll over on their backs for a big stretch. The Weather Channel™ has predicted a big warm-up before Christmas, including rain. Nothing is more dismal than rain on Christmas, but at least it will make it easier to get the ice off the driveway. This matters because my wheelchair doesn't like ice and snow. Nor does the Hoveround® and I like to be able to SEE my dogs, especially at night. Seeing Christmas go by is depressing, but one thing is not: tossing all the catalogs into a bag for my daughter to recycle. She is adamant about keeping every can, bottle, and box out of the landfill, and I try to go along with that. It is amazing how much stuff I have for her each week, and that is just for two adults. When the kids were little we must have filled an entire county by ourselves! I will also be taking a break after this article to re-do my Home Page. The election is thankfully over and life can return to normal. Charlie Brown has taken home his pathetic Christmas tree on TV, carols will have been sung, and my supply of wrapping paper has been used up. It will be a time for making a new Excel™ spread sheet of addresses and cards sent and received. The envelopes keep my addresses updated for next year. There will be time to send letters to people that I promised to write to in their Christmas cards. We have received some thoughtful gifts, and thank-you notes are in order there. The only job remaining is taking down the Christmas tree and the lights. After waiting an entire year for the holiday, I think I will leave them up for a while to remind me of past times when the family was all together. To everyone a safe, healthy, and Happy New Year!
