Some say that the 9-11 "thing" is being overdone, but not my husband. So yesterday he got permission from his employer, an area hospital, to do a brief presentation out at the flagpole at the exact time-8:46 AM---that the first jet slammed into the World Trade Center in New York City. His message was brief, just to ask for a moment of silence from those attending to honor the memories of those who died followed by saying the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.
He estimated that about 50 people came outside to participate in the event. He told me that there were patients in wheelchairs who had been brought out when they heard the announcement on the hospital PA system and wanted to attend as well. Today he received an Email that at the second hospital (which has a merger arrangement with his) also made the moment of silence in memoriam announcement and that several dozen people came outside for it. What does this mean? It means that America is not ready to forget the act of war that was perpetrated on our country in 2001. We are not ready as a nation to let go of our love for individuals who were senselessly slaughtered in the name of radical Islam. And it also means that the younger generation following ours must be acutely aware of the dangers existing in the world and be prepared to act against them. My husband said that the hospital PR person had notified local media so that they could pick up on the story and he noticed several of them there. Perhaps that will encourage other hospitals and organizations to do the same thing next year. On a personal level I am intensely proud of my husband for having the idea to spread the "moment of silence" among the hospital staff and others, and for carrying it out so effectively. Just Mom |
