Easter this year came very early-March 23rd. To most of us this meant that we'd have to look at clothes that were made for warm weather and wear clothes that were made for cold weather still. I tended to feel sorry for the little tots in their fancy outfits shivering. Hunting for colored eggs would be done in snow suits that had not yet been packed up. Spring flowers would only be available from florists, and the visible bunnies would be made of chocolate. The Easter story would not coincide with Passover as it did biblically. In short, things were just not right!
Add to that the coincidence of an event that was not biblical but was also sad-the announcement that the number of US military personnel killed had reached the number 4,000. Regardless of your religion the crucifixion of Christ elicits strong feelings that a man who attempted to bring peace should meet such a horrendous death. Similarly the troops who attempted to bring peace to the Middle East met with terrible deaths only in greater numbers. The difference is that for Christians, death led to resurrection and the promise of eternal life. For our military, death led to funerals and memorials and great sadness. Easter at Tangled Oaks was very subdued this year, a time to be grateful for family and to quietly feel sympathy for those whose families had been ravaged by war. I hope you will pardon my article being late this week. As happy as I was to celebrate Easter for its meaning, I really couldn't feel the joyousness of the holiday. It was tempered by the knowledge that 4,000 other households would not feel joy this year. Just Mom |
