I got our first Christmas card last week and it prompted me to get busy on the cards that my husband and I would send out. Every year since before our marriage I have done the artwork and verbiage on the cards. Some years have been comical, others rather serious and even religious. Only last year did I produce no cards, but now there is more of a Christmas spirit in the family. Even though we are spread far apart, Christmas will keep us together, more so in difficult times like the past year. Moving to another state keeps us far from family, but there is Email to keep us in touch with one another. Barring that, there is a telephone and snail mail.
This year we are even closer, at least to each other, because we are creating this year's cards TOGETHER! I sketch out my plan; I devise the verbiage that will accompany it; my husband colors in the figures on his computer. The task that was once done by me by hand is now done by a machine. But I don't regret giving up this part of the job, because it means that I can do a larger number of cards in time to have them reach the recipients before Christmas. Plus I am learning a new skill using graphic arts that will be useful. Never refuse to add a new skill to your arsenal. At Tangled Oaks we have seen two snowfalls so far. They amounted to little, but encouraged several frantic calls to the tractor dealer to exchange the mower for the blower before we got a real snowfall. The autumn leaves were never raked up before they were covered up with white stuff. The second tree felled by lightning still sits waiting to be cut up for additional firewood. My Hoveround isn't reliable on wet grass, let alone on snow! Tonight's forecast is for freezing rain. Eww. The dogs have problems on icy surfaces, and that may be a challenge getting business done promptly. Beyond that tomorrow is trash night and an icy driveway could mean problems getting the cans up to the street. I want to begin decorating for Christmas. It would be so much easier if I could stand up, but I will do my best. I also want to get the rug cleaned so that I can put up the Christmas tree. It is impossible that it is already the ninth of December. Changing over the refrigerator calendar before, I was already marking New Year's Eve and the start of January, 2008. What will l the New Year bring? Will my children as adults find satisfaction in the lives they've chosen? Will the neighbors' children grow up to that age while we live here? The Weather Channel thermometer has shown the temperature steadily dropping. It is now set on 32, the freezing point. I can't imagine what the roads will be like tomorrow morning, and I pray for my husband's safe transport to work north of us. Latest word from my boss is that it is POURING! Yuck! Wet dogs! Holding both umbrella and flashlight from my wheelchair? Not easy. But necessary and we do it every day regardless of the weather. That's part of having pets. I can see the neighbor's icicle lights from my window. Maybe I'll be able to put SOMETHING up to decorate this year. Perhaps a lighted waterfall? Just Mom |
